1st Quarter Promotions And Awards at Corpus Christi and Kingsville

by Major Joe Ely Carrales, CAP
CC-CAP— The 1st Quarter’s end is already upon us and I am pleased to announce that we are moving our cadet through the CAP Cadet Program with poise and all do respect. One of our goals is to qualify four cadets for the Wight Brother’s Award and begin their training and implementation of the CAP Cadet NCO Program. Do this date we have three of those four cadets, C/TSgt Philip Lozano, C/SSgt Steven Johnson and C/SSgt Bryce Nix. In addition to these NCOs, there were some Cadet Airmen level promotions. C/A1C John Flores and C/Amn Dylan Morris were promoted to their rank and new responsibilities. The best way to express these promotions is through a sort of biographical approach.

C/TSgt Philip Lozano– Cadet Lozano is currently finishing up his second year in the Civil Air Patrol Cadet Program. He sits on the Group V Cadet Advisory Council, has sat on the Texas Wing Cadet Advisory Council and also sits as the Corpus Christi Comp Squadron’s representative to the Corpus Christi Mayor’s Council on Veteran’s Affairs. In the Summer of 2007, Cadet Lozano participated in Flood Relief activities in South Texas. This gathered him the attention of CAP notables who praised him for his volunteer service. Cadet Lozano was awarded the Air Force Association's Outstanding Squadron Cadet of the Year Award for 2007 for his volunteer efforts and display of leadership. This was followed by the award of this Wright Brothers award later that year. Cadet Lozano was promoted to C/TSgt in accordance with Civil Air Patrol Regulations and was awarded his Community Service Award at a meeting held on 11 March 2008.

C/SSgt Steven Johnson– Cadet Steven Johnson has been an outstanding cadet in the CC-CAP Cadet Program. Originally joining in the late Spring of 2007, Cadet Johnson has been a driving force in the growth of the Cadet program at Corpus Christi. Originating from Calallen, Texas, Cadet Johnson, and his family, have come to represent stability in the unit. Cadet Johnson was critical in assisting the Cadet Program effort in Kingsville by attending Brahma Cadet Flight meetings on Thursdays and helping to develop strong cadets in Kingsville. For these efforts, Capt Sandy Phelps recommended Cadet Steven Johnson for the Air Force Association's Outstanding Squadron Cadet of the Year Award for 2008. He is to be promoted officially to his rank at the next available meeting. He too has achieved the Wright Brothers Award.

C/SSgt Bryce Nix– Cadet Bryce Nix was among the first cadets from Kingsville, Texas to join the CAP Cadet Program effort their. Since the time of his induction into the Civil Air Patrol he has rocketed through the CADET Program taking the helm of the Brahma Cadet Flight as its Flight Commander. In this roll he has served as a mentor to new cadets and a primary motivator of his fellows regular displaying the type of leadership that guides the unit to increased prestige. Cadet Nix attended the 2007 Summer Encampment with fellow Cadets Morgun Bedynek and Celeste Resendez. He also attended the Group V Airman Leadership School with fellow (then) future CC-CAP NCO Cadets Lozano and Johnson. Historically speaking, Cadet Nix is the first Civil Air Patrol NCO in Kingsville, Texas in over 20 years. Cadet Nix currently attends Academy High School on the campus of Texas A&M University-Kingsville. Cadet Bryce Nix is a contender for future awards and is poised to rise to great length is CAP. He was officially promoted to his rank in a ceremony at Memorial Middle School on 11 March 2008.

C/A1C John Flores– Cadet John M. Flores is a rising star in Kingsville, Texas. Among the first cadets of the 2007-2008 school year to join the Brahma Cadet Flight, he has taken his role with stride and grace. He has served as the Element Leader of the Bravo Flight for the majority of the school year and is now set to become the commander of the Bravo Flight. Cadet Flores has represented his unit to various activities including a day trip to Alice, Texas’ Commemorative Air Force and Aerospace education trips to Harrell Elementary. He is also leading the Color Guard Efforts at Kingsville, Texas.

C/Amn Dylan Morris– Known affectionately as “The Rocket Man,” Cadet Morris assumed the role of Aerospace Education cadet with stride and received praise from Harrell Elementary Staff for and outstanding model rocketry presentation and launch to first graders at Harrell Elementary. A hard working cadet, we look forward to dedicating future articles to his exploits.
