Emergency Services: The 24 Hour Pack

Many cadets have inquired about what should be in a 24 hour pack.  I try to make mine a useful as possible and even carry it in my car.  It has saved me many times. The answer can be found in the ground team guides...

1) The 24 hour pack is what you carry while searching. As it's name infers, in case of an emergency, this equipment will help you survive in the wilderness for 24 hours. In addition, your 24 hour pack is part of your uniform -- when the public sees you on a mission, they will probably see you wearing your field gear. Because of this, your 24 hour pack must present a professional uniform appearance. Though packs do not need to be identical, it is advantageous for unit members to have similar 24-hour packs.

Some items are part of your CAP uniform.  Begin with the FIRST AID ITEMS, some are needed items for use at CAP missions.  Start small and build your 24 Hour pack.

Meeting Agenda for Coastal Bend Cadet Flight- 28 April 2011

"Often times, I endure ridicule by some fellow CAP Officers (respectfully in line with our core values...of course) for pointing out that there are things in CAP that can 'kill a person' if they do not pay attention.  It sounds harsh, I admit that...but safety starts with each of us having situational awareness...that most serious understanding of those issues around us that can harm.  We must be aware of the possibility of getting hurt...or worse.  I care deeply about all CAP member's being present, safe and uninjured.  That is why I point that out." -Maj. Joe Ely Carrales, CAP

Coastal Bend Cadet Squadron Again Travels to Corpus Christi

Corpus Christi, Texas- In an effort to promote Group unity between the Squadrons of Southern Group V, Major J.E. Carrales, transported a number of cadets to Corpus Christi, Texas to conduct a joint meeting of the Coprus Christi Comp Squadron and thw Coastal Bend Cadet Squadron.

"In the Summer," began Major Carrales, "we will also make some treks down South to Brownsville and reconnect with our CAP brother and sister airmen there."

Major Carrales indicated that the idea fo begin CAP operations in Kingsville was originally discussed at CAP STATION BROWNSVILLE at Brownsville International Airport.

"Then Major Sean Crandall approached me and asked why I had not begun recruiting cadets in Kingsville," continued Major Carrales, "I had tried to make a unit there in 1998, but lacked knowledge and skills in all things CAP.  That initial effort failed...but we began small."

In 2007 Major Carrales explored forming a unit at Memorial Middle School in Kingsville, Texas.  That became the Brahma Cadet Flight which worked as an instrumentality of the Corpus Christi Comp Squadron, which Major Carrales at the time commanded.

That unit grew into its own and in time there was sufficient interest in founding a new unit there.  Thus was born the Coastal Bend Cadet Squadron.

"We trace our heritiage back to Corpus Christi," added Major Carrales, "thus we will always be linked and...with all do effort...we will continue to strengthen that link."

Bravo Flight Cadets Construct 22 ft Tower

Kingsville, Texas- At the 21 April 2011 meeting of the Coastal Bend Cadet Squadron several cadets, led by Bravo Flight Cadets, consturcted a 22 foot tower out of PVC pipes and poly-chord rope.  The structure is designed to be a COMMUNICATIONS asset designed "in house" to supplement CAP Communications in this part of South Texas' coastal bend.

"This tower," began Major Carrales, "is an example of what people can do with local supplies and mimimal cost.  It will eventually stand 32 ft high, is made of PVC pipes and necessary connections and is stablized by 'guy lines' steaked to the ground nearby."

Cadets had only minor difficulty adjusting the tower by used these as learning experiences that will make training them on other CAP MASTS and ANTENNAS used by CAP.

APRIL 2011

The overall Goals for April 2011 were well addressed.  Marching generally improved and that was displayed in  Buc Day's Parade: Passive Security detail was only mildly addressed, that will be a greater concern for May 2011 in that it is BEACH to BAY where that skill will be needed.

The skill of setting up Tarps was proven during WEEK IV with Alpha Flight's successful placing of the gray tarp.  Tents will also be focued on in MAY 2011.  Issues came to light with the tower, those have beend addressed and the tower will be set up under the guidance of Cadet Del Valle in May.*  Corpus Christi Hooks Game on 17 April 2011 was the largest exposure to the Community this year.

The Squadron van was transferred in support of Buc Days on 25 April 2011 and the Coastal Bend Cadet Squadron made its way to Corpus Christi to practice for the parade.

Several Prizes were give out in Week IV.
KNOCKOUT WINNERS:
1st Round: C/Amn S. Del Valle (prize: water bottle)- BRAVO FLIGHT

CAP Cadets from Memorial Present Colors at Hooks Game

by Major Joe Ely Carrlaes, CAP

Corpus Christi, Texas- Cadets from the Coastal Bend Cadet Squadron presented the Colors at the 17 April 2011 outing of the Corpus Christi Hooks baseball club at What-A-Burger Field in Corpus Christi, Texas.  The opportunity to present the Colors during opening weekend came to the unit via the good graces of Mr. Steve Richards, Director of Ballpark Entertainment, who coordinated with the Coastal Bend Cadet Squadron staff to make the opportunity a reality.

All four cadets who participated attend Kingsville's Memorial Middle School (MMS).  In attendance for the occasion representing the Unit's cadets and MMS were C/SSgt Savahanna Jimenez, C/SrA Juan Vela,J C/SrA Juan Cardec and C/Amn Jon Stillwagon.

The cadets practiced all week in preparation for the activity.  Kudos to C/SSgt S. Jimenez, CAP who really displayed her leadership abilities in making this happen.

The next high profile activity to present the colors will be the Beach-to-Bay Relay Marathon.  A colors element may be formed for the Buc Day Parade, however, that activity will be a sustained march instead of presentation of the colors.

It is hoped that those colors elements will be joint ones between the Coastal Bend Cadet Squadron and Corpus Christi Comp Squadron.

With the focus of the Unit being directed to the Buc Days Tuesdays will become heavy on marching and games of knockout.

"It will be very important to polish up all our drill and ceremonies." said Major Carrales, "of Coastal Bend Cadets, I can take only 10 safely in the van.  There will have to be a selection process.  I am also encouraging parents to help by attending the parade, if possible, and driving them to the activity."

April 12th 2011 Meeting and Promotions

Promotions

Congratulations are in order for Cadets Phelps and Ortiz as they passed their required tests to be promoted to:

Cadet Airmen Phelps --> Cadet Airmen 1st Class Phelps

Cadet Airmen First Class Ortiz --> Cadet Senior Airmen Ortiz

Promotions are a time to acknowledge achievement but also increased responsibility. I am extremely proud of the cadets for going up in rank and look forward to more promotions before I leave the second week of May back to Dyess AFB.

Prospective New Cadets:

The Corpus Christi Squadron had a bunch of surprise potential recruits this past Tuesday. Two cadets were 11 years, one will turn 12 in May and another in August. They are extremely dedicated to becoming cadets and want to continue to come to meetings to learn all they can about the cadet program.

The cadets showed their leadership skills by introducing the cadets to drill and ceremony, and after Captain Guadalupe played a game of KnockOut with the cadets and prospective cadets. They did excellent, the cadets taught them well.

Afterwards the cadets and prospective cadets all discussed the importance and meaning of leadership. It was a very eye opening and heart felt discussion by all cadets and senior members. After this discussion (which lasted for over an hour), Cadet Lidy was presented with his surprise for winning the KnockOut competitions during the air show. Captain Guadalupe presented Cadet Lidy with a Flan de Queso (which takes a very long time to make). This desert is a Puerto Rican delicacy and is not made often. He elected to share with everyone present and it was a great time!!

Pictures to come!!

April Activities coming to Fruition

Kingsville, Texas-  The Coastal Bend Cadet Squadron continued its preparations for its April activities with color guard practices and work on its Field Activity Deployment drills.   Members of the Alpha and Bravo Fights were very busy this week improving communications equipment and UDF skills.

CONGRATS to BRAVO FLIGHT: APRIL WEEK II FLIGHT OF THE WEEK

Colors Element- C/SSgt Savahanna Jimenez has done an excellent job in preparing the squadron color guard for the activity at What-a-burger Field in Corpus Christi, Texas.  This will be one of the highest profile events any Coastal Bend Squadron has presented the colors for in the history of both units.

The Color Guard has been honing its skills and will represent CAP to the Corpus Christi Hooks baseball organization.  This will in itself be a practice for the Beach-to-bay Activity where a joint Coastal Bend Cadet/Corpus Christi Composite Squadron color guard will present the colors at that activity.

COMM TOWER- A 30 ft COMM tower will be designed by the Bravo Flight.  The First 10ft have been designed and set up using rope and 2 in PVC pipe.  The second 10 ft will be erected next week.  It is hoped that a CAP radio can be allocated to test the integrity of the tower once it is totally set up.

The towers, including the 12.5 foot flag mast uses as a training device, are to be painted green and stored as a kit for use at SARex activities.

"We will design and place several of these kits across our part of GROUP V," said Major Carrales, " maybe we can have a mobile system that can better service CAP via communications.  We will try to set up a Ground Sortie at a future SARex to set up these antennas.

NAS Air Show!!

April 9&10, 2011

Corpus Christi Composite Squadron Attends NAS Air Show

It is the 100 year anaversary for Naval Air Power! The Air Show this year was met with a big response by the people of Corpus Christi coming out to show their support of the different military branches and of course, the blue angels.

The Copus Christi Composite squadron had their own tent display for both days along with their Air Plane, for recruitment purposes as well as to explain the role of the Civil Air Patrol to all who inquired. There were many air planes on the flight line. The customs and boarder patrol allowed the cadets to tour their Communications Air Plane (only ones allowed) which started off the air show with a great treat. The cadets toured the flight line looking at the many planes that were shown at the air show.
Below: Blue and White F-18 SuperHornet; Blue Angels F-18 Hornet; Grey F18 SuperHornet; Blue Corsair (WWII Carrier Fighter);

The cadets were able to show the airplane to many potential cadets and their families. They played Drill Down with NavyJROTC cadets and potential future smaller cadets (ages ranged from 7-10). LTC Barfoot had the opportunity on Saturday to be interviewed by Texas News Channel 3, Captain Guadalupe was interviewed on Sunday and to top things off, the cadets had the opportunity to talk to two 2nd LT student pilots who graduated from the Air Force Academy. They answered many of the cadets questions, it was a great time.

Below: Cadet Barnes shows the cadets around the airplane; The 2LT's answer the cadets questions; LTC Barfoot is interviewed by channel 3 News

And of course the Blue Angels performed on Sunday April 10th, 2011. The show was a great spectacular and it was refreshing to see them as Saturday's performance was canceled due to wind and low cloud coverage.
All in all a great Air Show and a very good showing for the Civil Air Patrol.

Corpus Christi Camp Swift/Camp Out

April 2, 2011

The Corpus Christi cadets traveled to Camp Swift April 1,2011 to help the National Guard with some tasks in order to recieve a scholarship for one of their cadets to this summer's encampment. Those who participated were:

1) C/MSGT Barnes

2) C/TSGT Lidy

3) C/SrA Clake

4) C/A1C Ryder

5) SM Ryder

6) CAPT Guadalupe

It was a great time, where the cadets interacted with other Texas Wing cadets ranging from C/AB to the encampment cadet commander who holds the rank of C/LtCol. The tasks which were given to the cadets included:

1) Breakdown and reassemble barrack furniture from one building to another

2) Break down gun casings and ammo for the National Guard

3) Painting of gun range polls to increase safety for National Guard members.

After the tiring day of working hard for their money, the Corpus Christi cadets enjoyed a camp out at the squadron building playing Halo and Black Ops while growing together as a unit from this experience.

April 3, 2011

The cadets were woken up by the sounds of jets and propeller's starting up as the West Virginia Air National Guard landed at Corpus Christi Airport as part of a training exercise. The cadets were fortunate enough to be shown around by a Flight student from Kingsville NAS who's squadron was also conducting training flights. He showed the cadets around the training jet they use and they were able to see the Air Force C-130 take off, a trainer jet take off and two blackhawks take off in a very exciting morning.

The 1LT was so kind to show the cadets and senior members the trainer jet

Coastal Bend Cadets practice Woodsmanship

Kingsville, Texas- As part of continued ES FIELD ACTIVITY DEPLOYMENT (FAD)  training, cadets from the Coastal Bend Cadet Squadron ventured into the woods to scout for suitable wood poles to use as future TARP and TENT poles or for other general use.

Using a "Sierra Saw" available from a certain discount store familiar to most South Texans, as well as most all AMERICANS, the units two flight were able to find some useable poles.

"We were able," said Major Carrales, "to acquire three.  Next week a small detail of cadets will find the fourth and we will try to set up a tarp...a small one for practice."

The unit will be using the normal plastic tarps, usually blue, for training and acquire some canvas ones for use on FAD assignments.

"The lack of shade is an issue in many places," continued Major Carrales, "having the ability to generate 'shade' anywhere at any time is a major plus for safety against the sun's rays and subsequent heat."

The three "poles" are of mesquite, slighty bowing...but usable, and are about 6 feet tall.

Some cadets grew fond of the "tree line pickings."

"I want this one!" exclaimed C/Amn A.R. Delapaz while holding one like an over grown shilleagh.

The poles will be allowed to dry, sanded and protected with shellac or some other sealer.
