COASTAL BEND CADET SQUADRON MEMBERS TO TRAVEL TO BROWNSVILLE

SOUTH TEXAS- To promote cadet fraternity and amity among the cadets of the newly formed Group VII/Texas Wing a day trip has been organized to take several cadets to visit a meeting of the Brownsville Composite Squadron on 14 June 2011.

12 Cadets can go and the van is available.  Cadets will meet at 1500L hrs (regular meeting time) and the Kingsville meeting will be only 1 hrs.

Cadets who attend trip will leave at 1600 hrs, 10 dollars will be needed and each cadet will provide three of those dollars for gas, the rest is for dinner.  Since the meeting will end in Brownsville at 2100 hrs, return is expected to be late during the 2300 hour depending on how long it takes to drop off cadets.

CAP UNIFORM is MANDATORY.

"This continues out unit's policy of working with the cadets of other units," said Major Joe Ely Carrales, Coastal Bend Cadet Commander, "we have been working closely with out Sister Squadron in Corpus Christi and now will meet and better acquaint ourselves with the cadets of Brownsville."

The move mirrors and initial trip to Brownsville undertaken in 2005 where Major Joe Ely Carrales, Major Fidel Alvarado and then Capt. Sandy Phelps made a "fact finding" trip to examine Squadron Operations for the rebuilding of the then struggling Corpus Christi Composite Squadron.  It was during that trip that the most basic ideas for a flight of Cadets in Kingsville was discussed.

Cadets were to provide Major Carrales with proof of intent to attend.

3-4 June 2011- CAMP OUT/O-FLIGHT WEEKEND at Bishop Municipal Airport

Bishop, Texas- Cadets and CAP Officers are currently planning a Camp Out/O-Flight weekend for 3-4 June 2011 at Bishop Municipal Airport.  Cadet Spencer and Major Carrales will begin moving materials to the site at around noon.

CHECK BACK FOR UPDATES and WEATHER

Additionally, I want this to be a "prototype" for other summer "camp out" activities  testing  such things such as 1) expense (how much food, supplies, money et al will be needed for future events) 2) the interested of the cadets and 3) if these activities are even possible  (things like behavior, attention and the like)

Since camping experience is likely limited, much effort will be made on teaching several key concepts.

Setting Up a Camp Site (tents)
Setting up a "cook area" (setting up a tarp)
CAMP COOKING (from as much a "scratch" position as is practical)
activities that build on the knots lessons

An ELT SEARCH will be organized to introduce/reinforce the skill.

O-Flights, flown in pairs, take will  about 2 hours each.  Bringing 3 cadets each will account for at a minimum 6 hours of flying.  With two pilots, we can "prep" the next group of cadets and fly continually.  I would recommend starting as early as possible. Two cadets can fly on Friday.

The Dawn of Group VII- Texas Wing

Texas Wing- The Texas Wing announced Thursday, 31 March 2011, the creation of two new Groups. Col Brooks Cima, Texas Wing Commander, cites the move is to relieve the "administrative burden on our Group Commanders."  This effects both the Corpus Christi Composite Squadron as well as the Coastal Bend Cadet Squadron which which previously bad been organized as part of Group V.

"The Corpus Christi Comp Squadron had been a member of Group V since early this decade," said Major Joe Ely Carrales, CAP, "prior to that we were organized under the old Group 3/Texas Wing."

The Texas Wing had adopted a 5 Group plan during the latter part of the Administration of Col Frank Eldridge.  This had resulted in the loss of several Groups and creation of several geographically large, albeit well commanded areas.

"Group V was actually, in a very real sense, larger that some Wings," continued Major Carrales.

Group VII will be commanded by notable Brownsville Composite Squadron Commander Lt Col. Sean Crandall and centered in the Rio Grande Valley.  Group V will continue to be be commanded by Lt Col Eddy Billman of San Antonio.

The Coastal Bend Cadet Squadron offers it support and the best of wishes for a successful Command to Lt Col Crandall and looks forward to working with Rio Grande Valley units and Victoria. Major Jay Workman will be the new Group VI Commander.

LETTER FROM COL B. CIMA, CAP

Texas Wing Members,

In order to relieve the administrative burden on our Group Commanders, we have come up with a plan to reorganize the current Groups and create two new groups. This reduction in units puts the span of control into a more reasonable range and reduces (in many cases) the distance for members to travel to Group-wide events. After these initial changes settle out there may be minor \"tweaking\" to accomplish the first reason for this change - to make performing missions and doing training easier for our members.

The hallmark of my command is the statement \"One Wing - One Team\". I urge you to assist your Group Commander and give them your complete support but think of Group boundaries simply as administrative lines.  Train at locations that are the most geographically convenient and support weaker units that can benefit from your strengths.  These changes will make Texas Wing stronger.

Congratulations to Major Jay Workman, the new Group VI Commander and Lt Col Sean Crandall, the new Group VII Commander.

This link to the new Groups will take you to a .pdf file that puts squadrons into their new command structures. A map is under construction that will make the divisions by county.

Regards,
Brooks
